Participatory Mapping and Resource Networking Workshop
January 3-January 10, 2006 in San Francisco, Peru
This workshop is designed to provide Shipibo-Conibo leaders with capacity in participatory learning and action methods (PLA), GPS (Global Positioning System) participatory mapping technology, and resource networking skills, and direct links which will provide villagers a solid foundation to initiate their own development initiatives in the region. Training in both PLA methods and GPS mapping will provide concrete skills that will enable villagers to conduct baseline studies, document cultural, social, and environmental resources, and develop methods to share information with other villages and resource organizations.
The workshop is thus designed to initiate long-term, grassroots-based development initiatives in the Ucayali region of Peru. These skills and tools will enable villagers to acquire the information and data relevant to their own development initiatives, to effectively organize and mobilize their own communities, and to create linkages with organizations that can provide the necessary resources and funding to carry out sustainable development initiatives.
The entire workshop will be filmed in order to produce a documentary on initiating community-based sustainable development in the Peruvian Amazon, to be used for learning purposes and for future funding efforts.
Course Overview
Day 1
Introduction to Village Earth Approach/ Participatory Learning and Action Methods

Day 2
Strategic Planning: Vision, Contradictions, Action Planning Provide basic skills to engage in action-based planning process in individual communities.
Day 3
Regional Mapping: Participatory 3-Dimensional Modeling (P3DM) exercise. Group designs on a 3-D model of the Ucayali region. The exercise is designed to integrate the participants local knowledge of surrounding resources. It will also be used to analyze regional issues and to provide concrete methods for decision-making, especially regarding spatial issues related to territory.
