Earth Sheltered
Homes
by
Kathryn Harrison
Earth sheltered
houses are mostly covered beneath the ground’s
surface. The surrounding soil provides natural
insulation, making the interior temperature easier
to heat and cool.

Windows facing
the south or overhead skylights provide daylight
and solar heat. The best location for an earth
sheltered house is on a well-drained hillside,
but these houses can be built on almost any site.
