Community
Capacity Building
Village Earth
supports grassroots community development on the
Pine Ridge Reservation by facilitating communities
in creating a vision for their community, identify
the obstacles to achieving that vision, and then
creating practical plans of action needed to transform
their communities. However, Village Earth believes
that without access to resources no plan can be
a success. To this end, Village Earth works to
create long-term linkages between communities
and resource instutions on and off the reservation.
With this approach, communities not only have
ownership over their vision for the future, but
also have access to the resources to achieve it!

Cluster
Housing

"The
cluster housings came in 1962 in Oglala.
I moved, and my tiyospaye dissipated, all
moving towards the housing. So did other
communities, they all moved to a central
location. And you know what happened, those
old tiyospaye feuds are still active, still
there, so you have those nasty looks they
give each other, progresses to words, then
it progresses to hissycups, broken windows,
crime, because you have several tiyospayes
living together. That’s why I moved."
