Course Description

This course introduces the major activities and concepts related to grass-roots level community-based disaster mitigation.  Disaster mitigation includes activities and projects that a community carries out to reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards such as flooding.  The course covers the role of the community, components of disaster mitigation, programs, organizations leading grass-roots disaster mitigation programs, and major stakeholders involved in disaster mitigation.  History illustrates that the most successful programs start at the community level, rather than a mandated top-down approach.  The course discusses various related issues to disaster mitigation such as sustainability, green building, and best practice building techniques.  Finally, the course focuses on the vulnerable populations, such as gender and age inequalities that arise during and after disaster.  The course provides a unique perspective on sustainability and community development, a perspective often overlooked in development.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe major techniques used for disaster mitigation
  • Discuss and employ techniques of sustainable development
  • Understand the empirical and theoretical basis for disaster mitigation programs
  • Understand the difference between “developed” and “developing” countries’ approaches to disaster mitigation
