Preparing for Service
2 CEUs – $390
Duration: 5 Weeks
When students and volunteers head into the field for service learning and volunteer trips, they are often unprepared for what lies ahead. As a result, service participants can find themselves struggling to understand their role as a volunteer, impeding their projects from reaching their full potential. To address this problem, training prior to departure is essential. This course will help those leaving for volunteer programs, whether they be through Peace Corp, an alternative spring break program, a church mission, etc. better prepare for the experiences ahead of them.
Using Village Earth’s model for development, this curriculum will act as a five-week crash course for those headed into the field. We will discuss all of the essentials that you must understand to be successful in your work. From analyzing your day-to-day interactions with those you will help, to understanding the larger picture of development work, this course will help you prepare for successful service.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Understand the important distinctions between internal and external priorities
- Develop a strong framework for understanding and analyzing what they will experience in the field
- Analyze relationships of power, and understand concepts of humanization and empowerment
- Better grasp the importance of their role as a volunteer
